FAQs

How was the SIF Attain tool created?

SIF Attain was created from ground-truth, gold standard soil core data. Satellite data alone has proven inaccurate for soil carbon, so we have taken a totally different approach.

Researchers at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Arizona State University standardized soil core data from hundreds of sources, collected since 1950, and using a peer-reviewed temporal adjustment technique, they created a usable database that was provided to SIF.

Using AI, all the soil core data was then combined with 99 covariates including climate, slope, soil texture and land use and the result is the most comprehensive and reliable Soil Carbon Potential model ever created. You can now discover your Soil Carbon potential for any field in the U.S. or the European Union.

What do each of the values represent? Baseline and Attainable?

Baseline Value: Is a temporal-adjusted baseline estimate of the levels of soil carbon and water holding capacity in 2020 based on peer-reviewed science and 99 covariates including soil texture, slope, climate and land use.

Attainable Levels: Calculated ground-truth values of highest measured carbon levels for similar conditions defined by 99 covariates including geological, meteorological, and land use conditions.

What are the accuracy levels of SIF Attain?

SIF Attain’s model for both Soil Organic Carbon and Soil Inorganic Carbon is performing excellently on training sets, reaching over 80% accuracy, which is 40% more accurate than most current models. This is because we are using ground-truth data and multiple covariates through AI and not satellite data.

  On Training Set
Model Results MAE RMSE R2 Score NSE
SIC Percentage 0.521 0.687 0.758 0.544
SIC Stock 4.359 5.924 0.867 0.672

SOC Percentage 0.195 0.257 0.789 0.560
SOC Stock 2.766 3.637 0.730 0.507

SIF Attain’s accuracy will continue to improve as we add new real-time data into the model. Our model is dynamic and we expect to provide updates every year.

How much does SIF Attain cost?

SIF’s aim, as a public benefit corporation, is to help restore soil health across the world by scaling accurate soil measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) for farmers and incentive providers.

It is with this in mind that we have made our first product – SIF Attain – highly affordable for all stakeholders. Our flat rate pricing for all agricultural fields is USD $1.62/acre (USD $4/ha).

Who can use SIF Attain and for what?

Whether you’re designing a carbon project, verifying impact, or planning regenerative practices, knowing your soil’s carbon potential is the foundation for action, value creation, and climate impact.

  • Farmers and Landowners:
    • Understand your current estimated baseline soil carbon levels and the potential to increase them
    • Identify practices that improve soil health and qualify for carbon credits or incentive programs
    • Discover the potential of upcoming land purchases and provide more accurate valuations; then build long-term value through better management decisions
  • Carbon Project Developers:
    • Knowing carbon baseline and potential values is increasingly critical for reporting requirements. (For example, this is required by the ACCU and is being considered in other markets)
    • Pinpoint fields with high carbon sequestration potential before launching a project; and derisk investments by basing them on ground truth data models.
    • Use trusted, science-backed data to build robust MRV (Measurement, Reporting, Verification) frameworks
  • Brands and Supply Chain Managers
    • Knowing the potential of soil carbon sequestration in your supply chain is essential information to plan sustainability projects and Scope 3 reporting
    • Track and improve the soil health footprint across sourcing regions; and use SIF Attain data to quantitatively support regenerative procurement and ESG reporting
  • Policy Makers and Government Agencies
    • Accurately estimate natural capital resources and improve incentives for farmers based on both soil carbon increases and soil carbon protection
    • Support national and international climate targets with measurable outcomes using consistent, verifiable data
  • Agriculture Underwriters and Insurance
    • Improve risk models based on where land is expected to be most resilient
    • Provide incentives to farmholders who engage in practices that reduce the risk of soil degradation

Where can I use SIF Attain?

SIF Attain is currently available for every agricultural field in the continental United States, the European Union, the UK, Norway and Switzerland.

We aim to roll out other regions globally over the next 2 years.

SIF Attain is not currently available using our public tool for urban areas or non-agricultural fields but we can create reports upon request.

What fields can I get data on?

Within the regions described, we have land boundaries for all agriculture fields.

You can purchase data for up to 500 fields using the normal flow. Please contact us if you’d like to purchase aggregated data, or a larger field amount.

You do not need to own the field in order to get the baseline and attainable data.
